Comprehensive Guide to Kraft Paper Packaging: From Production to Sustainable Application

In today's world, where environmental awareness is growing, sustainable packaging is no longer just a trend—it's the future that brands must embrace.

With its exceptional environmental friendliness, multifunctionality, and cost-effectiveness, Kraft paper is emerging as a popular choice in the packaging industry. From food packaging to luxury gift boxes, from e-commerce shipping to retail displays, the applications of kraft paper are expanding, and its functionality continues to evolve.

But what exactly makes Kraft paper so popular?

In this blog, you will receive detailed information about Kraft paper packaging. Let's get started!

Understanding Kraft Paper

1、What is kraft paper?

“Kraft” originates from the German word for “strong”, and as the name suggests, kraft paper is naturally durable and tear-resistant due to its kraft pulp technology, and has a natural brown color.

It has many applications, including durable packaging paper, sturdy cardboard boxes, and rigid boxes. Through process adjustments, it can be produced in various colors to meet brand packaging needs. Its raw materials are primarily natural materials such as wood fibers and recyclable cardboard. While it can be bleached to white, the unprocessed brown variant is often preferred for its rustic, natural appeal.

2、Regular Paper vs. Kraft Paper

“Isn't it just paper?”—many people might think so. But the difference between kraft paper and regular paper is as significant as the difference between canvas and paper towels!

-Strength: the Kraft paper technology can peel off more lignin from wood pulp while retaining more cellulose, making it more tear-resistant and durable than ordinary paper. Raw kraft paper has higher porosity, resulting in slightly inferior printing quality compared to ordinary paper, but it is suitable for special processes like embossing and foil stamping, which can create a unique texture.

-Environmental protection and practicality:  Kraft paper also has distinct advantages. Its craftsmanship is self-sufficient, utilizing wood such as pine and bamboo that cannot be used in traditional paper-making; due to its low lignin content and high sulfur content, it is not only more robust but also heat-resistant, moisture-resistant, and oil-resistant, capable of withstanding impacts during transportation, making it suitable for packaging various products such as food and beverages, cosmetics, and home appliances.

-Cost: Kraft paper is more affordable than packaging materials such as plastic, and it has high strength and thickness without increasing the weight of the package, which can save transportation costs. As market demand for kraft paper and eco-friendly packaging continues to grow, its cost is likely to decrease further in the future.

3、Types of kraft paper

Classified by color

Brown kraft paper (natural color)

-Features: Natural dark brown color with the original texture of wood fibers

The surface may have some small impurities (natural features)

Unbleached, good fiber integrity, high tear resistance

-Applications: Shipping boxes, outer packaging (dustproof and moisture-proof) 、  Product packaging for eco-friendly brands

-Note: Bleach will reduce the strength of kraft paper, so it is recommended to use original kraft paper for packaging that requires high durability.

Classified by purpose

Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS)

Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS) is an ivory paperboard made from bleached chemical pulp. This kind of paperboard is neutral and does not have an aroma or taste, making it an ideal candidate for packaging food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. It also has higher tear resistance, making it a good option for an array of products beyond just food and cosmetics.

Clay Coated Newsback (CCNB)

Clay Coated Newsback (CCNB) is made from recycled paper pulp and features a kaolin clay coating on the front side for a smooth printing surface. The backside features a brown or grey kraft uncoated finish, which tends to be rough in texture. CCNB's bleached front side prevents ink from settling in the material, allowing precise, crisp lines and details when printing. In addition, the backside is a food-safe material, making it ideal for packaging food. This material is also prevalent in the apparel industry for packaging shoes.

Fully Recycled Clay Coated News Back (FR CCNB)

Fully Recycled Clay Coated News Back (FR CCNB) is made from recycled materials and is 100% recyclable. It features tear-resistant qualities and a naturally occurring clay coating for a smoother printing surface on the front side. The backside features a brown or grey kraft material, which tends to be rougher in texture. Compared to the regular CCNB counterpart, Fully Recycled CCNB is 100% made with recycled material, making it 100% eco-friendly.

Uncoated Unbleached Kraft (UUK)

UUK paper is unbleached, natural kraft paper that is uncoated on both sides. Made from less virgin wood fibre than other paperboards, UUK paper is an eco-friendly packaging material that is lightweight and extremely durable for packaging food and retail products.

Clay Natural Kraft (CNK)

Clay Natural Kraft (CNK) paper is made using at least 80% virgin unbleached wood pulp, making it an eco-friendly packaging material. Clay coated on the top side and uncoated on the back side, the coated top surface is a matte finish and offers superior printing capabilities for artwork designs, logos, and text. Ideal for cold chain packaging, this material is tear, moisture, and dust resistant, making it popular for packaging frozen food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products.

Production and Process of Kraft Paper

The name “kraft paper” originates from the pulping process pioneered by German inventor Carl F. Dahl in the 1880s, with the term ‘kraft’ derived from the German word meaning “strong,” accurately capturing its core characteristics. Today, kraft paper packaging has become deeply integrated into the printing and packaging industries—from the strong cushioning material used in packages to elegant gift box packaging. Within the realm of sustainable and eco-friendly packaging, it is almost always present.

The production of kraft paper essentially involves converting wood into pulp and then further processing it into paper. The main components of pulp are lignin and cellulose. Lignin is difficult to directly produce high-quality paper due to its structural characteristics, while cellulose is the key raw material for paper-making. The core of its production lies in decomposing the lignin in wood to release cellulose fibers. By subjecting wood chips to high-temperature “steaming” in a mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide, the resilient lignin is decomposed and separated from the cellulose. After impurities are removed through a sieve, the resulting material is processed into paper.

The key point is that although the steaming process can separate lignin from cellulose, it cannot completely remove lignin. The residual lignin and the abundant sulfur components in the pulp together confer excellent strength on kraft paper. Its natural brown color is the original hue of the wood pulp. If bleaching is performed, it can achieve a whiter appearance and prevent yellowing over time, but it sacrifices some strength and increases costs. However, even after bleaching, kraft paper remains stronger and more durable than regular paper.

2、Printing Technology

Kraft paper boxes are compatible with most modern printing technologies. However, due to their thick material and unique surface characteristics, inkjet and laser printing are generally not suitable, as the results are difficult to guarantee. Printing quality is largely dependent on paper quality, so it is essential to carefully inspect the paper surface for wrinkling, cracking, or staining, as well as understand its physical properties such as printability, absorbency, and optical characteristics.

The following are the two most widely used and mature printing technologies applied to kraft paper boxes:

Flexographic Printing

This is a commonly used printing method for kraft paper boxes (especially stand-up pouches) and is also suitable for corrugated cardboard. It uses photosensitive polymers instead of printing plates for printing. Modern flexographic printing machines are equipped with die-cutting and lamination functions, making it convenient to laminate or cut kraft paperboard.

Note: Due to the thickness of kraft paperboard, subsequent die-cutting and lamination processes may increase costs.

Offset Printing

Also known as offset lithography, this method is widely used for kraft paper boxes and other forms of kraft paper packaging. This technology uses zinc or aluminum printing plates to first transfer the ink image to a rubber blanket, which is then transferred to the kraft paper material. The oil-based ink used is compatible with the highly absorbent kraft paper, enabling the reproduction of full-color patterns.

Advantages of Kraft Paper Packaging

After understanding the definition and types of kraft paper packaging, let us focus on its core value — these packaging boxes can bring multi-dimensional practical benefits to products, specifically as follows:
